Should You Translate a Birth Certificate Before or After MoFA?
There is no single before-or-after translation rule for every foreign birth certificate used in a Dubai family-visa application. For MoFA attestation, the document must be in Arabic or English, or accompanied by an official translation. GDRFA Dubai lists an attested birth certificate for family sponsorship, but its published service requirements do not specify when an Arabic translation must be made. Translation timing by certificate language
- English certificate: MoFA accepts an original in English for attestation. Ask the visa-processing channel whether the final family-visa file also needs an Arabic legal translation, and when it should be provided.
- Arabic certificate: MoFA accepts an original in Arabic. Check the visa-file requirements before arranging any additional translation.
- Certificate in another language: MoFA requires the document to be accompanied by an official translation into Arabic or English. Confirm that the translation format you plan to use is accepted for your attestation and visa submissions.
A certificate being in English or Arabic does not by itself confirm that every part of the visa application is complete. The attestation requirement and the receiving authority’s document requirement are separate checks.
Plan the attestation and translation sequence

- Check the certificate’s language and issuing country, then ask the relevant visa channel whether an Arabic translation is required for the family-visa file and when it must be submitted.
- For MoFA attestation, prepare the original in Arabic or English, or have it accompanied by an official translation if it is in another language.
- Complete the authentication steps applicable to the issuing country before submitting the document to MoFA. For foreign-issued documents, MoFA describes prior attestation by the issuing country’s foreign ministry, followed by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country and then UAE MoFA; check the relevant mission’s procedure for your country.
- Submit the attested birth certificate and any required translation through the applicable Dubai family-visa channel.
What to check before submitting a Dubai family-visa file
- Confirm that the certificate and its attestations are ready in the format required for your case.
- Check that names, dates of birth and parent details are consistent across the certificate and passports.
- If translation is requested, confirm the accepted language, certification and submission stage before commissioning it.
- Prepare the other supporting documents requested by the relevant visa channel.
